## About
I started my career at the University of Pisa in the group headed by Filippo Barbanera (2008). Here, I acquired skills with wet-lab experiments and data analyses related to CONSERVATION genetics issues and published the results of my MSc thesis addressing hybridization in insular populations of red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa), a gamebird of major socio-economic interest. In 2010, I was awarded a Post-Graduate Research Fellowship funded by the Ministry of Interior of Cyprus to work on the endemic Cypriot mouflon (Ovis orientalis ophion), turning into a wildlife forensics paper. Then I started a PhD in Molecular Biology (2011-2014) with a project on the molecular evolution and CONSERVATION genetics of gamebirds. This included the molecular validation and phylogenetic reappraisal of Asian francolins (Francolinus spp.), that turned into my first authored paper. Importantly, during these years I collected a number of rewarding first teaching and training experiences with Italian and foreign BSc and MSc students as assistant for the course in “Animal Conservation Biology” and started to be invited as referee for peer-reviewed scientific journals. In 2014, I published further results of my PhD contributing for the establishment of wildlife MANAGEMENT practices in Cyprus. I also worked as laboratory instructor to foreign public research institute staff for a DNA barcoding project in collaboration with BirdLife Cyprus and the Game and Fauna Service, Ministry of Interior of Cyprus and the University of Cyprus. This turned into a paper providing a major contribution to wildlife forensics in Cyprus. In 2015, I wrote a first-authored paper in PNAS, publishing the most striking results of my PhD about the historical anthropogenic impact on Mediterranean BIODIVERSITY inferred by a multidisciplinary approach. This work triggered a fruitful collaboration with Smithsonian archaeologist Melinda Zeder. Then I got further papers related to biological homogenization by human-mediated wildlife reshuffling in collaboration with the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trusts (UK) and the systematics of the endangered Cypriot mouflon. While maintaining a vivid collaboration with my former research group, I propitiously obtained a prestigious Severo Ochoa Postdoctoral Fellowship (2015-2017) and moved to the leading institution in Spain for research BIODIVERSITY and CONSERVATION biology: Doñana Biological Station (EBD-CSIC). There, I joined the “CONSERVATION and Evolutionary Genetics group” headed by top-level researchers Carles Vilà and Jennifer Leonard, starting to explore the newest frontiers of genomic-related lab and computational work in a stimulating and competitive international working environment. I greatly expanded my bioinformatics expertise to manage and process the huge amount of data associated with novel high-throughput approaches, also familiarizing with cost-effective reduced representation methods like targeted enrichment and acquiring landscape genomics skills. Specifically, I was first incorporated into a large project where my task was refining marker systems for genetic monitoring of vertebrate communities. Meanwhile, in 2016 I moved to France (University of Rennes 1) to lead a noninvasive genotyping project on western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), delivering major insights into social structure and mobility. The results were presented at international (2nd Joint Meeting of the French Zoological Society and the Italian Union of Zoology, Turin, Italy) and national (XIII Congress of the Spanish Society of Mammalogists, Guadalajara, Spain) meetings in 2017, while still reaping the benefits of my doctoral work, as testified by the invitation at the International Conference “Animals at Court” at Ludwig-Maximilian University (Munich, Germany) with a talk stressing the multidisciplinary reach of my research. In 2018, I was awarded an Eurasiacat Postdoctoral Fellowship and moved to The National University of Singapore, in the Avian Evolution Laboratory headed by Frank Rheindt. Here I contributed a whole genome resequencing project on the red junglefowl (Gallus gallus) to inform MANAGEMENT strategies in collaboration with overseas ornithological collections such as the Natural History Museum of London and the American Museum of Natural History in New York, which help me to foster my genomic know-how with novel and cost-effective techniques for BIODIVERSITY monitoring. I was later awarded a Canon Research Fellowship at Kyoto Wildlife Research Centre (Japan) to work on the Japanese golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos japonica), hence I moved to BIOPOLIS/CIBIO (Portugal) to characterize the ruminal microfauna in Portuguese livestock breeds prior to moving to the University of Alcalá (UAH), where I am currently working on small mammals microbiomics and tick-borne zoonoses.
